Bed bugs are usually not visible to the untrained eye because they hide in tiny cracks and crevices.  They visit their host for a feed just before dawn.  Not everyone has a reaction to their bites and develop a skin rash.   The bites become raised and very itchy.  Early detection and treatment is the best before they infest the rest of the premises.
